Gboard’s Shift Key Broke for Some Android Users. Here’s How to Get Capital Letters Back

Some Pixel and Xiaomi owners suddenly can't type capitals in Gboard. The beta looks like the culprit. Here are the fixes that work for now.

You tap Shift, nothing happens, and every sentence comes out in lowercase. If that’s been your week with Gboard, you’re not imagining it. A growing number of Android users say the Shift key in Google’s keyboard has stopped responding, and Google hasn’t said a word about it yet.

The good news: there are a few quick fixes, and one that looks more permanent. The bad news: the quick ones don’t stick.

What’s going wrong

Android Authority flagged the problem on Thursday, October 9, after complaints piled up in two Reddit threads, one on r/gboard titled “cant type capital letters anymore” and another on r/pixel_phones titled “shift key broken.” The symptom is simple. The Shift key goes dead at random, so you can’t capitalize a letter manually.

The reports so far come from Pixel and Xiaomi phones. Android Authority and Android Headlines both say other brands could be affected, but nobody has confirmed that.

The most useful clue is who’s affected. At least one Reddit user with the bug was enrolled in the Gboard beta. So was the Android Authority reporter whose phone broke the same way. That reporter couldn’t reproduce the bug on the latest stable Gboard release. Neither outlet calls the beta the proven cause, but it’s the obvious suspect.

Quick fixes that buy you a few hours

These restore the Shift key, but expect the problem to come back within a few hours or a day or two. Android Authority’s own test phone started working again after a cache clear and force stop, then broke again the next day.

  1. Force-stop Gboard. Open Settings, go to Apps, find Gboard (you may need to tap “See all apps”), and tap Force stop. Open any text field and the keyboard relaunches.
  2. Clear Gboard’s cache. On the same Gboard screen, tap Storage & cache, then Clear cache. Don’t tap Clear storage unless you’re willing to lose your learned words and settings.
  3. Restart your phone. Hold the power button (or power and volume up on recent Pixels) and choose Restart.
  4. Switch keyboard layouts. In Gboard’s settings, change to a different layout and back again. Users report this also brings Shift back temporarily.

The fix more likely to last: leave the Gboard beta

If you signed up to test Gboard, getting off the beta is the step most likely to make the bug go away for good. It isn’t guaranteed, since the beta link is still unconfirmed, but it’s what both outlets suggest.

  1. Open the Play Store and go to Gboard’s listing.
  2. Scroll to the section that says you’re a beta tester and tap Leave.
  3. Wait for the change to process. It can take a little while before the Play Store offers you the stable build.
  4. Update Gboard from the Play Store once the stable version appears. On Pixels, where Gboard comes preinstalled, you can also open Settings, Apps, Gboard, tap the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall updates, then update from the Play Store.

Not on the beta and still seeing it? Run the quick fixes above, and consider sending feedback from Gboard’s settings so Google has more reports to work with.

What Google needs to do

A keyboard is the one app you can’t avoid. When it breaks, it breaks everything: texts, emails, passwords with capital letters, the works. Android Authority asked Google whether it knows about the issue and whether a fix is coming, and as of publication Google hadn’t responded. Android Headlines also notes that Google has yet to acknowledge the problem.

Beta testers sign up for rough edges, but a dead Shift key is more than a rough edge. Until Google ships a fix, our advice is plain: if you rely on your phone for work, get off the Gboard beta now and rejoin later. You’ll lose early features for a few weeks. You’ll get your capital letters back.
