Galaxy S23 One UI 9 Update Is Rolling Out. It’s the Last Big One Your Phone Gets

Samsung's Android 17-based One UI 9 is rolling out to the Galaxy S23, Z Fold 5, Z Flip 5 and A56. Here's when U.S. owners can expect it.

The Galaxy S23 is three years old, and on Wednesday it started getting its last big birthday present. Samsung’s Android 17-based One UI 9 is now rolling out to the Galaxy S23, S23+ and S23 Ultra, along with the Galaxy Z Fold 5, Galaxy Z Flip 5, Galaxy A56, Galaxy A36 and Galaxy A27.

There’s a catch for American owners, and it’s the usual one. The update is live in South Korea first, and for the S23 it is reaching people who were already in the One UI 9 beta before anyone else. If you’re in the U.S., tapping “Check for updates” today won’t find anything. It should soon, though, and this is the update that matters most for a lot of these phones, because for several of them it’s the final full Android version they will ever get.

What’s rolling out, and where

9to5Google counts eight devices in this batch, on top of the roughly dozen Galaxy models that already had One UI 9 as of last week. Samsung started the stable rollout in late September with its newest phones. The Galaxy S25 and Z Fold 7 picked it up in the U.S. in early October, and Android Authority reports the Galaxy S24 series got its U.S. build only a couple of days before the S23 rollout began.

Here’s what the Korean builds look like, according to Sammy Fans and Android Headlines:

  • Galaxy S23 series: firmware S91xNKSU8GZIF, a 3.85GB download, with the October 2026 security patch. Sammy Fans says non-beta users in Korea can now install it too.
  • Galaxy A56: firmware A566SKSUADZJ1 (the Korean model sold as the Quantum 6).
  • Galaxy A36: firmware A366NKSU9DZIF.
  • Galaxy Z Fold 5, Z Flip 5 and A27: rolling out in Korea, with beta testers first on some models.

Samsung has also closed the One UI 9 beta program and is telling testers to move to the stable build. The Samsung Members feedback forums are winding down, so if you were on the beta, there’s no reason to stay there.

When will the U.S. get One UI 9 on the Galaxy S23?

Nobody outside Samsung has a firm date, and the outlets tracking this don’t fully agree. 9to5Google says Samsung usually widens a rollout to other regions “within a day or two.” Android Authority expects all regions to have it “within a week or two.” Android Headlines says international firmware for the A-series should land “over the next couple of weeks,” and Sammy Fans pegs the A56 and A36 global wait at about a week.

Our read: plan on the longer estimate. The S24 only got its U.S. build days ago, and U.S. variants have to clear carrier certification at Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T before they ship, so a one-to-two-week wait is the safer bet. If you bought your S23 through a carrier, assume you’ll be toward the back of that line.

When it shows up, the steps are the same as always:

  1. Back up anything you care about (Settings > Accounts and backup).
  2. Plug in or make sure you’re above 50% battery. The S23 build alone is nearly 4GB.
  3. Go to Settings > Software update > Download and install.
  4. Connect to Wi-Fi, then leave the phone alone for the install and the first reboot, which takes longer than a normal restart.

The last major update for the S23, Fold 5 and Flip 5

This is the part S23 owners should think hardest about. Samsung promised the Galaxy S23 family four generations of Android upgrades. The phone launched in February 2023 on Android 13, then moved to Android 14, 15 and 16. Android 17 is number four. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 launched later that year on the same Android 13 base, under the same four-upgrade policy, so they’re in the same spot.

Support doesn’t end today: Samsung also promised these phones five years of security updates, which runs into 2028. But new features stop with this release. When One UI 10 shows up next year, the S23 won’t be on the list.

The A56 and A36 are in a very different position. They launched in 2025 on Android 15 with Samsung’s six-generation upgrade promise, which leaves them plenty of road after this one.

Phone Launched with One UI 9 status (Oct. 15) Android upgrades left after One UI 9
Galaxy S23 / S23+ / S23 Ultra Android 13 Rolling out in Korea 0
Galaxy Z Fold 5 Android 13 Rolling out in Korea 0
Galaxy Z Flip 5 Android 13 Rolling out in Korea 0
Galaxy A56 Android 15 Rolling out in Korea 4
Galaxy A36 Android 15 Rolling out in Korea 4

What you actually get

Set expectations accordingly. 9to5Google flatly calls One UI 9 something that “isn’t a major update,” and that’s fair. Samsung’s notes promise new customization tools, a more flexible Quick Panel, refreshed system app layouts and notification cards, smoother animations and faster app launches. Sammy Fans, never one to undersell Samsung, still says the animations “feel rigid” next to some rivals.

The bigger open question is Galaxy AI. The release notes for the A-series builds leave Galaxy AI out entirely, which is no surprise for midrange phones. For the S23, Android Authority points out that Samsung hasn’t updated the Korean release notes yet, so it’s not clear whether the S23 gets the full set of One UI 9 AI features or mostly a visual refresh over One UI 8.5. Given the S23 already runs a big chunk of Galaxy AI, our guess is that it keeps what it has and picks up a few, not all, of the new tricks. We’ll know when U.S. changelogs appear.

Should you install it right away?

For most people, yes. It carries the October 2026 security patch, and it’s the build Samsung will support from here on. If you rely on your phone for work and can’t tolerate a weird bug for a week, waiting a few days after your carrier pushes it is reasonable, but don’t sit on it for months. That’s where the security risk starts.

The bottom line for S23 owners

One UI 9 is a solid, unflashy update, and the S23 is still a very good phone to run it on. But it’s also a signal. If you’re on an S23, Fold 5 or Flip 5, you now know exactly where your phone’s feature road ends. You can keep using it safely for another couple of years. You just shouldn’t buy one now expecting it to get much smarter, and if you’ve been eyeing an upgrade, the next twelve months are the window when your trade-in is still worth something.
